Web Support FAQ

How do I request a domain name?
To request a new top-level domain name ( ______.ucla.edu), you need to fill out parts I and III of the Domain Name Request Form (PDF) and email it to HumTech Support. The approval decision is made by campus IT Services and External Affairs. Please allow one to two weeks for a response. For policy details, refer to the UCLA Policy 411: Registration and Use of UCLA Domain Names.
What CMS software do we support on our website hosting platform?

HumTech supports WordPress, Joomla, Omeka, and Drupal. We are primarily a WordPress shop and actively develop WordPress websites in collaboration with PIs. The other CMSes are supported, but not actively developed, meaning the PIs will need to manage all maintenance and development required to keep the website sustainable and secure. All website CMS software are the responsibility of the PI, including all plugins and any add on software.

What is a dev website?
As we start the redesign process of a website, the web operations team will build out a Word Press Content Management system that at first serves as a development website (i.e. DEV) before it is released as a live website accessible by all. The Dev version your website will serve as the ultimate testing ground on how the website will function in a live environment.Example: dev.spanport.ucla.edu is what the redesign of spanport.ucla.edu began as when we launched the Word Press Content Management system for the Spanish Portuguese departmental website redesign. When the website goes live, we remove the test environment Dev from the URL while everything we built within the Dev environment stays the same when we move the site over to a live version. Before we begin expecting anyone within a department to help us add or edit content in a DEV website we will supply you with the proper Dev URL, as well as secure username password to login.
What is your backup policy?
HumTech maintains multiple backups of each website, and these are stored in more than one location. Daily backups occur four times a week, and a monthly backup occurs once a month.
