Far From Moscow

Website: http://www.farfrommoscow.com/ Principal Investigator(s): Prof. David Macfadyen, Musicology

A database of new music, poetry, and regional songwriting from more than 3,000 independent artists in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. This unique resource, on a daily basis, documents new music from six nations, while contextualizing and analyzing it in an academic format. Audio, video, images, and even a free music publication service together allow distant voices to be heard in the US and at home. The site houses several thousand articles and has now spawned three offshoots, which will actively support free speech in Eastern Europe – as citizen journalism, verse, and/or song. Spin-off projects include FFM News, FFM Radio, and Noisymap.
