Wednesday, Jan 31, 2018 – 2:00pm to 4:00pm

This two-hour workshop will introduce participants to GitHub, a platform for hosting your Git-versioned files in the cloud so that you can share, collaborate on, and even publish your code, texts, and other files openly. We’ll also briefly cover Git, a command-line version control system for tracking changes in files, especially where multiple contributors are working in collaboration. These tools are not just for programmers and developers! Many scholars use Git/Github to write and share code and data sets; create community or classroom spaces for sharing documentation, training materials, and assignments; and to host websites.

During the workshop, participants will get up-and-running with GitHub and learn how to make the most of GitHub features to work smart, collaboratively, and openly. We will end with some basics of using Git command-line tools (no experience with the command-line required!) to track and version files on our own computers alongside GitHub.

Attendees should bring a laptop with Git enabled and with their favorite text editor. Mac and Linux users should have Git already enabled. Windows users should install the Babun Shell for Windows. Some recommended text editors include: Atom, Text Wrangler, and Sublime Text. For more detailed setup instructions, visit https://github.com/kirschbombe/learngit/blob/master/setup.md.

*Laptops with Git are available for checkout at the CLICC lending desk (arrive early, we will not have these in the workshop).
