This Archive Could Be Your Life: Building a Punk Collection at UCLA

April 14, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Anti-establishment. Chaotic. Loud. The punk rock movement has left an indelible mark on the Southern California cultural landscape. In 2013, UCLA Library Special Collections launched an effort to acquire materials related to punk and the punk scene to help document this socially relevant movement.

Inspired by collections like Cornell University’s Hip Hop Collection and UC Santa Cruz’s Grateful Dead Archive, UCLA Library staff created the LSC Punk Archive to collect the primary source materials of musicians, promoters, producers, managers, photographers, artists, and and any voices involved in the diverse music and culture of LA punk. By preserving the historical artifacts, UCLA students, faculty members, scholars, and the general public will be able to view and work with these unique items for years to come.

Megan Hahn Fraser, head of processing projects for the department, will talk about the collection’s origins, rare items acquired so far, and plans for the future.

This occasional series explores Library collections and projects with the staff who acquire and make them available. You are welcome to bring your lunch; coffee and cookies will be served.

Seating is limited. RSVP to UCLA Library Development at <rsvp@library.ucla.edu>
