Revealing Hidden Stories: the Role of the Conservator in Advancing Scholarship in Medieval Manuscripts, beginning with the Archimedes Palimpsest

October 20, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Abigail B. Quandt, Head of Book and Paper Conservation, The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore

Medieval manuscripts are complex objects containing a compilation of texts and images that were enclosed in intricately wrought bindings. This lecture will describe some of the discoveries that were made during conservation of the Archimedes Palimpsest, and that have recently been made about manuscripts from The Walters Art Museum collection. Quandt will discuss how this research has advanced our understanding of the material construction, ownership, provenance, and later alteration of the objects. Quandt specializes in illuminated manuscripts on parchment and has lectured and published extensively on this topic.
