Library Workshop – Data collection: Web-scraping

February 1, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Research Workshops – Winter 2017
Data collection: Web-scraping (sixty minutes)
Wednesday, February 1, 5–6 p.m. in Young Research Library, Research Commons Classroom
Many websites provide scholars with data (including text, images, sound files) that can be used for research purposes. But
capturing online content efficiently without resorting to copying and pasting can be a challenge. We will introduce Import.io,
an application that allows users much of the functionality they need for basic web-scraping. Even if you can write your own
scripts, this application is worth learning. Students can pick it up quickly and test out strategies. Best of all, it’s free. Taught by Zoe Borovsky, Ph.D. Librarian for Digital Research and Scholarship.
