Getting started with Git (and some GitHub)

April 4, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Young Research Library, Research Commons (RC) Classroom, Room 11630F, Young Research Library
Los Angeles, United States
+ Google Map

This two-hour workshop will introduce participants to Git, a command-line version control system for tracking changes in files, especially where multiple contributors are working in collaboration. We will also cover GitHub, a platform for hosting your Git-versioned files in the cloud so that you can share, collaborate on, and even publish your code, texts, and other files openly. These tools are not just for programmers and developers! Many scholars use Git/Github to write and share code and data sets; create community or classroom spaces for sharing documentation, training materials, and assignments; and to host websites.

During the workshop, participants will learn the basics of using Git command-line tools (no experience with the command-line required!) to track and version files on our own computers and get up-and-running with GitHub features to work smart, collaboratively, and openly.

Attendees should bring a laptop with Git enabled and with their favorite text editor. Mac and Linux users should have Git already enabled, but please go through the setup instruction below to be sure. Windows users should install the Babun Shell for Windows. Some recommended text editors include: Atom, Text Wrangler, and Sublime Text. Please complete the setup instruction here before the workshop: https://github.com/kirschbombe/learngit/blob/master/setup.md.

Instructor will be on-hand 30 minutes before the workshop begins for setup help.

*Laptops with Git are available for checkout at the CLICC lending desk (arrive early, we will not have these in the workshop).
