Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts
May 5, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Lunch will be provided (RSVP required)
· Peter Jaszi, Professor, Washington College of Law, Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property, American University
· Janet Landay, Program Manager, Fair Use Initiative, College Art Association
If you use copyrighted materials in the Visual Arts in your teaching and/or scholarship, the Code of Best Practices is written for you, and can help you exercise Fair Use to the greatest extent possible! The Code is “based on a consensus of professionals in the visual arts who use copyrighted images, texts, and other materials in their creative and scholarly work and who, through discussion groups, identified best practices for using such materials. They included art and architectural historians, artists, designers, curators, museum directors, educators, rights and reproduction officers, and editors at scholarly publishers and journals.”
Our presenters will describe the Code and the process of its creation. Then we will have a working lunch, when Peter will join a panel with campus copyright experts. They will address audience questions about specific use cases, to demonstrate how the Code can assist in making Fair Use determinations.
Come join the conversation! Please RSVP to give us your lunch preferences, and when you do, please share your specific Fair Use questions so our presenters can break it down for you.
