Mapping Transborder Complexity

Principal Investigator(s): Maite Zubiaurre, ELTS & Spanish and Portuguese

Mapping Transborder Complexity is a MEXUS-supported digital mapping research project between UCLA (Maite Zubiaurre) and ECOSUR-Conacyt (Sergio Prieto and Abbdel Camargo) that looks at the migration patterns and territorial reconfigurations of Mexico’s Southern border through individual maps made by migrants themselves of their journey through Central America and into Southern Mexico. These maps add invaluable information and insight to and even contest the “big” top-down maps with which national and international institutions and governments cartograph migration and migratory routes.
