Using Lockdown Browser as a Student
Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that increases the security of online testing in BruinLearn. Before using the Respondus LockDown Browser, you must download the program directly on your course website to your computer.
Instructions
If your instructor is requiring you to use Respondus LockDown Browser, for your test:
Navigate to the test in BruinLearn using a normal web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
Click the link to download LockDown Browser if you haven’t already done so. Once the software is installed. Click the “Launch LockDown Browser” button
Launch the LockDown Browser, log in to Bruin Learn, and navigate to the quiz. You will then be able to take the exam.
Once a quiz has been started with LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until the Submit All and Finish button is clicked.
Taking a Quiz
Before taking a quiz using Respondus, ensure you have a strong, reliable internet connection. Give yourself additional time to complete any pre-exam checks that might be required before the quiz.
Once you’ve successfully installed the LockDown browser application, open it on your computer.
After launching the application, you may be asked to close some blocklisted applications running on your device. To proceed, click “Close Applications.” (If the LockDown Browser asks for permission to access your webcam and/or microphone, click allow.)
Sign in with your UCLA Logon ID, then navigate to the Bruin Learn course that contains the quiz in question. Open the quiz then click “Take This Quiz.”
If your instructor has enabled automated proctoring, you may be taken through a series of pre-exam checks before the actual quiz.
You may be asked to show your University ID to the webcam. Be sure to have your University ID card available during the pre-exam check.
If this is a timed exam, the timer will not start until you have completed all pre-exam checks.
Complete your quiz as usual. Once it is submitted, you can close the LockDown Browser.
Respondus Monitor
You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, non-proctored exam. (The webcam feature is sometimes referred to as “Respondus Monitor.”)
Please note that your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone, and a broadband connection for all users is required.
If a quiz requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, follow steps 1-5 in the previous “Taking A Test” section. At this point, the Startup Sequence for the webcam begins.
You will first need to review and agree to the Terms of Use.
The Webcam Check will confirm that your webcam and microphone are working properly. On Mac, you will need to Allow access to the webcam and microphone if you receive a popup.
The remaining steps of the Startup Sequence will depend on the settings chosen by your instructor. Follow the instructions and note your progress at the top of the screen.
If you encounter a problem, select the “It’s Not Working” link for troubleshooting tips. The quiz will begin after the Startup Sequence is complete. You cannot exit LockDown Browser until the quiz is submitted for grading.
