IALLT Webinar – Beyond Generic AI: Custom Tools for Beginner Language Learning

March 19 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

IALLT logo, white letters on green fieldThis webinar presents practical lessons from developing and implementing three custom AI tools—AI-migo, XiSPA, and TAR-íA—designed for lower-level Spanish learners at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) to address limited exposure outside the classroom and a lack of adapted practice materials. Drawing on experience from SPA001, an entry-level module serving over 700 students annually, the session illustrates how these tools provide scalable, level-appropriate support, formative feedback, guided conversational practice, and automated activity generation.

The presentation addresses practical challenges in designing AI tools for beginner language learners and outlines specific implementation considerations. Language educators interested in moving beyond generic AI tools to develop targeted solutions will find practical approaches that may be transferable to other languages and proficiency levels.
