Assessing the Writing Process: From Conferencing to Clarity

This workshop is open to all instructors and graduate students interested in process-based assessment and emerging tools for writing instruction.
How do we meaningfully assess not just what students write, but how they write? Join us for a one-hour Zoom workshop exploring approaches to evaluating the writing process (part of our ongoing Humanizing Technology Series)
We’ll open with a conversation featuring Christine Holten and Laurel Westrup (Writing Programs) on established methods for making the writing process visible and assessable, including conferencing, writer’s memos, and other strategies, moderated by Emma Ridder (HumTech). From there, we’ll shift to emerging tools, where Andrew Jessup (DTS, BruinLearn Center of Excellence) will introduce Turnitin Clarity and the insights it offers into student writing behaviors. Finally, Darrien Battle (Writing Programs), who is currently piloting Clarity in their composition course, will share how they’re incorporating that data into assessment and teaching.
