How to Configure Microsoft Remote Desktop for Remote Access and Some Common Trouble Shooting Steps

Here’s how to configure Microsoft Remote Desktop for remote access, as well as some common trouble shooting steps.

Note: Microsoft Remote Desktop Client has been renamed Windows App as of September 2024 for macOS, iOS, and Android.

Install and configure Remote Access

 

Note: To access a computer on the humanities network remotely, you’ll need a CDH VPN account and have an active AD account. For more details, please reach out to your department technology analyst (DTA) or email support@humnet.ucla.edu

 

Windows

  1. Install the Microsoft Remote Desktop App.

  1. Locate and open the Microsoft Remote Desktop App.

  1. With the Microsoft Remote Desktop app open, click on Settings.

  1. Click the [+] next to User account and enter your AD account login:

a.        Username: AD Account Username

b.        Password: AD Account Password

c.        Click [Save]

  1. Click the [+] next to Gateway and enter the following information:

a.        Server name: perimeter.humnet.ucla.edu

b.        Click [Save]

  1. Return to Microsoft Remote Desktop home screen and click on the [+ Add] to add PCs

  1. Under PC name enter the name or IP address of the computer you want to connect to [usually ends in humnet.ucla.edu].

  1. Under User account, select your AD account.

  1. Click on the Show more to reveal additional settings.

10.  Under Gateway, select perimeter.humnet.ucla.edu.

11.  Click [Save].

12.  The connection has been configured, and you can now try connecting remotely.

 

macOS

  1. Install the Windows App.

  1. Locate and open the Windows App.

  1. With the Window App open, select Windows App on the Apple menu bar.

  1. Select Settings or enter command + ,

  1. Select Gateways.

  1. Click the [+] and enter the following information:

a.        Gateway name: perimeter.humnet.ucla.edu

b.        Friendly Name: Humnet Gateway

c.        Click [Add]

  1. Select Credentials.

  1. Click the [+] and enter your AD Account login

a.        Username: AD Account Username

b.        Password: AD Account Password

  1. Close the Settings window and return the Windows App main screen.

10.  On the Windows App home screen click on the [+] to Add PC.

11.  Next to PC name: enter the name or IP address of the computer you want to connect to [usually ends in humnet.ucla.edu].

12.  Next to Credentials: select your AD account username.

13.  In the General tab do the following:

a.        Friendly name: [rename PC connection to something you prefer]

b.        Gateway: [Select Humnet Gateway]

14.  Click [Add].

15.  The connection has been configured, and you can now try connecting remotely.

 

 

 

Common Errors:

 

Note: The following section lists common error codes you might see. By clicking on the error code below, you’ll be guided to instructions on fixing the problem.

 

·      Couldn’t Connect

 

o   [Error Code: 0x50331743/0x300005f]

o   [Error Code: 0x516/0x204]

o   [Error Code: 0x3/0x5]

o   [Error Code: 0x83886084/0x50331750/0x5000004]

 

Error Code: 0x50331743/0x300005f

 

You might see this error if you’re not connected to the VPN or if you’ve typed in the wrong PC name. To resolve this error, refer to the steps below:

 

 

Solution 1 [Cisco VPN Setup]

Windows:

  1. Verify Cisco Secure Client (windows) is installed. (Download Link)

  1. Start Cisco Secure Client App by clicking Windows Start Menu/Icon on your taskbar, search for Cisco Secure Client, and Open app.

  1. To connect, enter sslvpn.cdh.ucla.edu, then click Connect.

  1. In the authentication prompt, enter your AD account login and password.

  1. Approve your login attempt using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)/Duo notification.

  1. Click Accept to complete your connection.

  1. Restart Microsoft Remote Desktop app before attempting to reconnect.

 

macOS:

  1. Verify Cisco Secure Client (macOS) is installed. (Download Link)

Note: Cisco Secure Client requires macOS 13 or higher.

  1. Open Finder, select Applications, select Cisco, and open Cisco Secure Client.

  1. To connect, enter sslvpn.cdh.ucla.edu, then click Connect.

  1. In the authentication prompt, enter your AD account login and password.

  1. Approve your login attempt using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)/Duo notification.

  1. Click Accept to complete your connection.

  1. Restart Windows App before attempting to reconnect.

 

 

Solution 2 [RDP Computer Name]

Windows:

  1. Start Microsoft Remote Desktop App by clicking Windows Start Menu/Icon on your taskbar, search for Microsoft Remote Desktop, and Open app.

  1. Locate Saved PC that requires edit.

  1. Select More Options (3 dot ellipsis) and Select Edit.

  1. Under Edit a PC, verify PC name matches the campus computer name [usually ends in humnet.ucla.edu].

  1. Select the arrow on the top left to return to Saved PC.

  1. Restart Microsoft Remote Desktop app before attempting to reconnect.

 

 

 

macOS:

  1. Open Finder, select Applications, and open Windows App.

  1. Locate Saved PC that requires edit.

  1. Click the window with two fingers and select edit or select the edit icon [pencil icon].

  1. Under Edit PC, verify PC name matches the campus computer name [usually ends in humnet.ucla.edu].

  1. Click Save.

  1. Restart Windows App before attempting to reconnect.

 

 

 

Error Code: 0x516/0x204

 

You might see this error if the RD gateway is missing or incorrectly setup. To resolve this error, refer to the steps below:

 

Windows:

  1. Start Microsoft Remote Desktop App by clicking Windows Start Menu/Icon on your taskbar, search for Microsoft Remote Desktop, and Open app.

  1. On the Microsoft Remote Desktop app select Settings.

  1. Under Gateway, verify the humnet gateway is entered correctly: perimeter.humnet.ucla.edu

  1. Return to Microsoft Remote Desktop home screen.

  1. Select More Options (3 dot ellipsis) and Select Edit.

  1. Click on the Show more to reveal additional settings.

  1. Verify perimeter.humnet.ucla.edu has been selected under Gateway.

  1. Return to the app home screen and try connecting the remote desktop.

 

macOS

  1. Open Finder, select Applications, and open Windows App.

  1. With the Window App open, select Windows App on the Apple menu bar.

  1. Select Settings or enter command + ,

  1. Select Gateways.

  1. Click on the Humnet Gateway and verify the following information:

a.        Gateway name: perimeter.humnet.ucla.edu

b.        Friendly Name: Humnet Gateway

  1. Close the Settings window and return the Windows App main screen.

  1. Locate Saved PC that requires edit.

  1. Select More Options (3 dot ellipsis) and Select Edit.

  1. In the General tab, verify Humnet Gateway has been selected under Gateway.

10.  Click [Save].

11.  The connection has been configured, and you can now try connecting remotely.

 

Error Code: 0x3/0x5

 

You might see this error if another user has logged in and is using the remote computer. By default, Microsoft Remote Desktop/Windows App only allows one user to be actively logged in.

 

Error Code: 0x83886084/0x50331750/0x5000004

 

You might see this error if the computer you are trying to remotely access is shutdown or has lost a connection to the network. Contact your Department Technology Analyst for assistance.
